Fun Indoor and Outdoor Activities for Kids to Do at Home
With what is going on in the world right now, we are all finding ourselves spending way more time at home and keeping kids entertained can be a challenge. Many cities are under orders to stay at home meaning there is no gathering in public spaces such as parks or libraries, schools are closed and coming up with new, fun activities for kids to do at home can be very difficult.
This list includes both indoor and outdoor activities so no matter what the weather is, you will have a few fun ideas in your toolbox.
Fun Indoor Activities for Kids
Create Vision Boards
This is a great activity that can double as a school project while your kids are learning from home. If you have old magazines lying around, you can have your kids cut out images and paste them to a piece of paper to create a vision board that outlines their dreams and goals.
Now, a lot of us might not have magazines (it is 2020) but this project can easily be done on the computer. You can use a free graphics creator like Canva or even just add saved images into PowerPoint or Google Slides to create digital vision boards!
Take a Virtual Vacation
This is one of our favorite ideas. Pull out your beach towels, put on those swimming suits, pull up Youtube travel videos or a movie with a tropical theme, and go on a virtual vacation.
You can make special drinks (for yourself and the kids), have tropical treats like popsicles and fruits, and take some time to relax.
Although it isn’t a replacement for sitting on a sandy beach and soaking up rays, it is something fun and different!
Sing Karaoke
Get the whole family involved for this one – especially if you guys love music! You don’t need a full-blown karaoke machine, you can pull up karaoke songs on YouTube and use a good old hairbrush for just as much fun.
Go the extra mile and pull out your holiday lights to really set the mood!
Board Games
Obviously we couldn’t make a list of indoor activities without mentioning board games! Board games are fun for kids and adults. They can really help break up the weekend and there are a ton of games to choose from! If you don’t have board games on hand, play card games like War or Go fish, you can also print off memory card games online.
This is also a great way to incentivize good behavior. If your kids are good all week and do their schoolwork, then they can be rewarded on Friday or Saturday night with board game night!
Fun Outdoor Activities for Kids
500
We have talked about 500 in another post about outdoor activities here, but definitely think it is worth mentioning again.
All you need are three players and a ball, a frisbee, a cornhole bag, or anything that can be thrown in the air. The first person throws the object of choice in the air and calls out a number between 1 and 500, whoever catches the object gets the number of points that was called out, and the first player to reach 500 wins.
We also think this would work well as a math lesson that focuses on adding double-digit numbers!
Cornhole
Since sports are canceled for the time being, why not give that cornhole game you used for tailgating some use? Cornhole is easy to play and fun for any age.
If you do not have a cornhole game and are interested in purchasing one, we are still creating and shipping games across the country. You can even design your own board! Click below for more information.

Chalk Drawing Art Show
Have some aspiring artists in your crew? Have a chalk drawing art show! This is exactly what it sounds like. Take an hour or so to create beautiful chalk art in your driveway and have everyone present their work. The best part is that all you need for this activity is chalk!
Outdoor Scavenger Hunt
This one takes a little bit of time to set up, but it is worth it. Create a scavenger hunt in your backyard for your kids. Give them clues and small items to find around the yard. Whoever wins gets to pick the next activity!
Toy Drag Race
This activity takes very little set up and will bring out the competitive side of you guys. Take some chalk and draw “lanes” down your driveway, then take toy cars, trucks, or really anything else with wheels and race them. This is a fun game that will keep everyone entertained!
If your driveway leads out to a street, make sure you or another adult stands at the end of the drive and stops the little vehicles.
We hope this list has given you a few fun ideas to do while at home with the kids. Right now, things are a little weird and adjusting to change is difficult but remember, we are all in this together and are learning how to deal with the new normal for now.
